Rising to The Challenge: National Grid teams up with community charities
This summer, National Grid teamed up with The Challenge to help deliver the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme. The Challenge looks to connect and inspire young people to strengthen their community links and develop their understanding of industry.
National Grid hosted numerous groups of 15-17 year-olds at their London Power Tunnels Energy Education Centre in Willesden, providing a tour of the site and a careers talk from senior project managers. The centre champions school pupils’ interest in STEM subjects and promotes science and engineering as a career.
Furthermore, members of the team acted as ‘Dragons’ in a community focused ‘Dragons Den’ initiative at the Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College campus in Southall. National Grid awarded funds to innovative charity projects dreamed up and pitched by the NCS participants themselves.
Sarah Harris, Regional External Affairs Manager, for the London Power Tunnels project, said:
“National Grid has really enjoyed hosting The Challenge groups at the EEC over the Summer 2015. This activity forms part of our ongoing commitment to support local organisations in the communities in which we are working. It has been inspiring to see young people engaging with social issues in their neighbourhood and presenting their ideas and innovations to a very high standard.”
Liam Hilton, Assistant Programme Manager for NCS with The Challenge in Ealing, said:
“We are so grateful to the team at National Grid. They have been fantastic hosts, giving our young people a real idea of what the working environment is like and providing invaluable feedback to develop their practical skills for work and life.”
National Grid’s London Power Tunnels project involves the construction of 32km of tunnels which will house electricity cables that will help keep Londoners plugged into safe and reliable power supplies. The project is due to be complete and operational by 2018. For more information go to www.londonpowertunnels.co.uk.
